Historical Fiction
History is a lifelong passion of mine, specifically early American history, Irish history and Jacobean/Interregnum history. My debut novel, Strange Vine, is a 105,000 work of historical fiction that follows the imagined story of Lydia Gilman, one of the original settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Strange Vine recently won the 2023 First Novel Prize (UK), run by Daniel Goldsmith Associates. I am actively seeking representation for this manuscript; please feel free to contact me if you’d like to know more.
Other history asides
I find the Puritans fascinating. Follow this link to read my (non-fiction) post about First Period meetinghouses in the Hingham Historical Society newsletter.
My favorite archive
There are so many interesting places to do primary source research but the Massachusetts Historical Society is just wonderful. Make an appointment and see for yourself.
Short Stories
I recently discovered the challenge and enjoyment of capturing life’s moments through short stories. Not a format to be trifled with, short stories demand both instant engagement and economy; a test for any novelist (self included). My debut short story, Stick Season, was a finalist in the New Ohio Review’s 2023 Fiction Prize and is forthcoming in NOR’s December 2023 online exclusive. Watch this space for updates about other pieces.
Freelance Writing
I take on a limited amount of freelance writing work, from non-profit grant writing to web content. Please contact me if you’re interested in working together.
About Me
A native New Englander, I spent many years abroad in Ireland and England, and hold a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. Now back in the USA with my family and dogs, I work in the creative design industry and like to spend time on the sea, snow or playing Celtic music when I’m not at my desk.
